Examples: Researching the company, speaking to sales reps, consulting customers, reading reviews of their products, spoke with acquaintances in the industry, etc.

This is a great time to lay out everything that you have done to prepare for the interview. From watching the news, to networking information, to interviews, company websites- I say, state it all! You can even joke that you pressed your shirt for the interview too. I think that this isn't a particular "serious/formal" question in that, it will be expected that you have done something or another to prepare yourself for it. Consider it more of a conversational question, and like-wise, don't frame an essay on WHAT EXACT STEPS you took in preparing yourself. Book are always good and a seldom used resource, if you can tie in that you've been reading/particular article references, it's only brownie points!
