If you have been job hunting for awhile now, it's probably not the best idea to let the interviewer know--it makes you appear weak and will have the interviewer wondering what's wrong with you that no one has hired you yet.
If you want to admit you've been looking, try to put a positive spin on things: you are still waiting for the job that will advance your career in the right direction, you have had offers but nothing was "calling your name", etc.

Possible reasons for a lengthy job search: personal matters, in the process of completing school, attempting to find a real career opportunity within a compatible company, trying to change careers, etc.
Don't admit to looking for a job for months or years, interviewers will view you as a desperate applicant.

I have been temping for a few years now, but in the last few days I have been looking for a permanent fixture. This job looks like it could be a worthwhile career move, and so I would be interested to find out more. Has the position been available for long? (answer with a question you see. Stay in the driving seat!)
