Best Answers to the question:(ranked by the quality)
1. Snowthunder - August 01 2008 (Answer ID: 20)
This is a standard "feel-out" question that many interviews will begin with. This is a particularly tricky question because a) more interview questions will follow suit so revealing too much information leaves for "empty" answers later on. B) Contrary to the question being asked, "telling" about oneself doesn't include anything regarding your personal life, stick to relevant facts about past work experiences, and education.
Verbal resume regurgitation is actually the underlying theme being asked. You may wonder the necessity of this question if they already have a copy of your resume. Your words look great on paper, (obviously, the reason to which you made it to the interview round) - but employees can't hire or put paper to work. You are a human, and like-wise, the employer is looking for human qualities such as confidence, ability to be clear and articulate, people/communication skills, body language, clean and professional appearance, etc. 70% of a conversation is body language, so make genuine eye contact, smiles, and professional/positive attitude. A great first impression is key!
2. Shams - November 19 2008 (Answer ID: 853)
When responding to this request, you should focus on both your personal and professional values. Always be honest, but talk about your best traits only, especially those that relate to the position for which you are applying. Highlight experiences and accomplishments you are most proud of. Here's an example:
"I'm an experienced communications specialist with extensive knowledge of public information tools and techniques. I've developed comprehensive communication plans for major public events, written dozens of articles accepted by worldwide publications, and created specialized educational programs for adults and students. I am always eager to learn new methods and procedures, and have implemented continuous improvement techniques in my past positions that saved money and increased productivity. I like working with people and enjoy group projects, but am also a self-starter who doesn't mind working on my own. I'm a volunteer with the local chapter of Special Olympics and enjoy participating in community events. My goals are to complete my Master's Degree and broaden my experiences with community relations."
Remember to tailor your response to the specific job. By studying the job announcement, you'll get a good idea of the skills and experience being sought. Work those into your response.
Consider this your own personal commercial. If the interview consisted of only this ONE chance to sell yourself, what would you say?
3. Dianna - August 18 2008 (Answer ID: 291)
Keep your response no more than two minutes long or you risk losing the attention of the interviewer. Practice until you are comfortable with your answer.
4. Cynthia - August 18 2008 (Answer ID: 290)
Don't just summarize your resume, explain how you became interested in the particular job or company, and demonstrate why you are the ideal candidate.
1. Start with a brief introduction. Talk about skills that are key to the position applied for. Sample: 'During my 2 years of experience as a sales executive, I have mastered the ability to prospect, generate business leads, and motivate my team members to reach targets.'
2. Provide a summary of your recent work history. Keep your response limited to your current experience. Don't go back more than 2 years. Sample: 'Most recently, at The XYZ Corporation, I was challenged with turning around a stagnant territory that ranked last in sales. I developed an aggressive sales campaign that focused on winning new accounts and nurturing the existing client base. Within six months, my sales team and I were able to increase sales by 40 per cent.'
3. Tie your response to the needs of the organization. Demonstrate how your experience and skills are transferable to the open position. Sample: 'I have learnt about the challenges your IT department is facing and my background in developing software for leading companies will add value.'
4. Ask an engaging question. By asking a question, you gain control of the interview. Doing so will alleviate the stress you may feel to perform. Sample: 'What strategies are currently underway to reduce the employee turnover and improve morale?'

This question is asked to get to know the candidate but more importantly to assess their communication skills. In addition the interviewer is evaluating the logic of the candidate's thought process...is the background presented in a clear, concise and orderly fashion or does the candidate jump around? Is there a clear sense of direction and is the candidate following a logical career path?
Have a well thought out and organized response because you know this question or some variation of it will be asked.

i.e. I am seeking a position in Accounting: Administrative Assistant, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Account Manager, Bookkeeping that is demanding and challenging where my experience and skills will be used to their fullest extent. I would like to be involved with a company that has its goals set on excellence and a progressive attitude toward itself and its clients. My personal objectives are to be the best at whatever I do. To perform at the highest level that produces concise, excellent results. I am very analytically minded, problem solving is my specialty. My goals are simple; my contribution to the company would have an impact that not only benefits the company as a whole, but also those individuals that I am around. I believe this can only benefit all involved including myself. I think offering something personal is okay as long as it is brief and shows your strong points such as...I spend my free time with my family and coaching T-Ball for local children suffering with disabilities. Keep it to two minutes and practice not sounding like you have rehearsed it all night. Make sure that your statement is said with your own vocabulary and not that of someone else's. That will add to your ability to shine with confidence.

Well, I’ve been working since I was 16, so for 8 years I’ve been learning, through various jobs, about customer service, sales, and how to deal with work stress. When I first started at Big Lots, oh so long ago, I went from being a young girl who dreaded working to someone who understood the benefits of work. At sunglass hut, I had my first experiences with sales. B y the time I left there was making top sales during every quarter, and even won a few sales contests. When I started at my current job, I was new to the stress of working in an extremely busy environment. AT first the chaos was overbearing and difficult to deal with, but after three years, not only have I kept up with my sales abilities through upselling, but I have developed into an absolute master at multi tasking, as well as customer relations and handeling stress.

87. s thangboi haokip - July 10 2011 (Answer ID: 6620)

120. RedBW - December 07 2008 (Answer ID: 1105)
This is a foolish question used by interviewers to throw a curve ball to the job seeker. The resume has already told them about you in a business sense so they are wasting their time and yours by asking it. Some interviewers ask it to find out about your personal life to see if there is anything going on that they don\'t like, such as maybe a divorce or how many kids you have etc. It can be used unfairly, as a weapon against a job seeker.

137. okiedoky56 - February 15 2011 (Answer ID: 5555)
I'm orginally from Bentonville, Arkansas. I lived there for 25 years and then relocarted to Texas for 12 years, then onto Georgia for 11 years. During my time in Texas and Georgia, I developed my skills and experience in customer service, computer, and administration, while working at GE Capital, Ikon Capital, and Geico Direct. In 2005, after getting a divorce, I moved to Colorado. There I worked for the Chamber of Commerce, as a administrative assistant and temp for Personel Employments Services, also know as PMS. I lived there until the Spring of 2007. My father lived in Oklahoma and was in poor health. I relocated to Oklahoma, to care for him. While caring for him, I was hired through Kelly Services and placed at Gatorade as a HR assistant and recpetionist. While working at Gatorade, Kelly Services awarded me as Employee of the Month. While working for Gatorade, I was under the impression that I would be hired full time. I was laid off April 2008. Reason gvien was that Gatorade had finished the inital hiring for the company and extra staff was not needed. I later found out that I wasn't given a position with Gatorade because I did not have one of their requiments to work in HR. That requiment was having a college degree, even though I had been performing that position for nine months and with very good feedback from others. Soon after that, I was in the process of being hired with WillStaff, when they decided to close their doors. A month later, after sucessfully passing all the required test, I was hired by Labinal, but never got the chance to start. I was hired on a Thursday and they wanted me to start their next training class which was the following Monday. Because of having military contracts, I needed a copy of my birth certif. I sent a request to obtained my certi. but couldn't get it by that Monday, so I had to wait until the next class, which never happen. That following spring, Labinal closed their doors. While still job searching, my father took a turn for the worse. I focused on caring for him and did odd jobs until his death in December of 2009. Shortly after his death, my brother, who I was close to, suddenly died. I spent a great deal of time pulling myself back together and refocusing my live. I've now have lived in Oklahoma for 4 years and this is where I want to stay. I'm in a comminted relationship and have other family that lives close by in Arkansas.
